Frequently asked questions

General

What vaccines are required?

At National Bark, all dogs must undergo an evaluation and have current vaccinations administered by a licensed veterinarian to be eligible for all of our services. Documentation of current vaccinations, such as distemper/parvo and rabies (given annually or every three years, depending on your vet’s administration), along with an annual bordetella vaccine, is mandatory. We highly recommend the Canine Influenza vaccine for extra protection. If vaccinations are not up to date, a 7-day waiting period begins the day after vaccination. Homemade vaccinations, handwritten records, sticker books, pet passports, and breeder vaccines are not accepted. For information regarding puppies and senior pups, please see our Policies and Procedures page.

To submit your records, we ask that you upload your vaccinations from your vet, in the portal. If you are having a hard time uploading your vaccinations into the portal, please make sure you have created an account with us and you or your vet may email us directly at info@nationalbark.com. Please be sure that the vaccination records are up to date and please include your first and last name in your email to ensure we match pup and parents correctly.

Reservations are required for all services to ensure we maintain optimal canine-to-staff ratios for the safety of every dog. Same-day reservations are permitted based on availability for current and returning customers. You can make your reservation via your customer portal, accessible through any ‘book’ or ‘reservation’ button. Alternatively, you may call us to schedule a reservation. First-time customers need to create an account and complete a free evaluation prior to their first service. Please note that it may take some time to confirm your reservation as our Front Desk and Managers collaborate to ensure optimal staff-to-canine ratios.

Our facility features both indoor and outdoor play areas designed for comfort, safety, and fun. Inside, dogs enjoy spacious, climate-controlled environments equipped with HVAC systems and air purifiers to maintain air quality and cleanliness. Outside, our adventure parks include shaded areas with misters, fans, and splash zones to help dogs stay cool on warm days. Additionally, a covered indoor space within the outdoor park offers a quiet retreat for dogs needing a break from the heat.

We invite you to experience our services firsthand with a special welcome for new clients. All first-time guests receive a complimentary half-day of daycare during their evaluation. This initial visit allows us to assess your dog’s temperament, play style, and comfort level so we can determine the best fit within our environment. It’s an important step to ensure that our facility is the right match for both you and your dog.

Our staff is highly experienced in administering medications and will carefully follow all provided instructions to ensure your dog’s health and safety during their stay. For prescription medications, please bring them in the original, labeled container with enough doses for the entire stay—plus two additional days, in case of delays or changes. For over-the-counter medications or supplements, please either bring the original container or organize them with clearly written instructions to ensure accurate administration. We typically administer pills using a small piece of hot dog, peanut butter, or a pill pocket. If your dog has a sensitive stomach or food allergies, we ask that you provide your own pill pockets or an approved method for giving medication. We do not mix medications into meals unless specifically requested and approved.

Some dogs may require additional time, patience, or specialized handling when receiving medication. If your pet falls into this category, please inform our team in advance so we can provide the proper support and care.

Please note: We do not administer injections, including Sub-Q fluids, insulin, or allergy shots, as we are not licensed veterinary professionals. We may reach out for clarification if medication instructions are unclear or incomplete.

We do not have a size restriction for dogs attending daycare, but we do monitor and make the best judgment based on the dog’s temperament and size for which play group they will join. Veterinarians typically delay administering all vaccinations until the pup is at least 4 months old. Additionally, puppies must be over 16 weeks old and have received their puppy boosters, including at least 1 distemper/parvo booster and an annual vaccine, a current rabies vaccine, and an annual bordetella vaccine. After they have received their final booster, there is a 7 day waiting period before they can enroll in our services.

In the event of a medical emergency, including instances where a pet falls ill, National Bark follows a structured protocol. For emergencies, we immediately contact the owner. Depending on the severity of the emergency, we will take the dog to the nearest emergency vet with the shortest wait time. For ongoing medical concerns that would be better suited outside the facility, we will communicate with the owner or the emergency contact listed on the registration form. Treatment will be sought from one of our trusted local veterinarians or emergency veterinary services. In situations where a regular veterinarian clinic is unavailable or closed, National Bark will engage neighboring veterinarians and emergency clinics. By enrolling your dog with National Bark, you authorize us to transport your pet to a veterinarian or another location if it is deemed necessary for their well-being. You acknowledge and accept the associated risks involved in such actions.

Daycare: Bring only your pup and their favorite treats. We kindly request that you refrain from dropping off leashes and collars; instead, bring them along, and we’ll provide ours for their stay. Please ensure that the treats you bring are dry food, and avoid bringing food or medications for their short day with us.

Training: Please consult our trainer for your tailored program and materials needed.

Spa Services: Bring just your pup, any treats, and or any special shampoos that are needed for sensitivity.

Boarding: Please bring your pup, their food, treats, and up to two toys for their stay. We provide everything else: bowls, blankets, a bed, and plenty of fun! We ask that you refrain from bringing blankets, as we have customized furniture for your pups and provide clean blankets during their stay.

Finally, please do not bring your own bowls; our bowls are sanitized with each use to ensure your pup’s safety and comfort. We prioritize your peace of mind, so your personal items do not get misplaced or damaged.

Facility rules: No rawhide or no-hide treats, or toys smaller than a tennis ball.

At National Bark, dogs must be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age for social daycare and boarding eligibility, unless opting for non-social options. We acknowledge that the decision on spaying or neutering, including timing, is between each owner and their vet. Ensuring all dogs are spayed or neutered by 6 months promotes safety in playgroups, preventing potential conflicts as dogs reach sexual maturity, and maintains a harmonious environment for all guests.

Our certified staff undergo rigorous training in canine training techniques, canine behavior, canine anatomy, canine infectious diseases, CPR, and first aid, upholding the highest standards of care. Additionally, they are proficient in proper cleaning protocols, prioritizing the health and safety of every dog and staff member under our supervision.

This evaluation is to see how they interact in our environment, with staff, and other dogs. Not to worry, we do not disqualify pups that prefer human and solo interactions from group play from our services. Our assessment process includes:

  • A hands-on meet-and-greet to ensure your dog is comfortable with handling and to check for any potential issues like fleas, ticks, or existing injuries.
  • One-on-one introduction with other regular staff members.
  • Gradual introduction into the open-play environment, customized to your dog’s size and temperament, starting with micro-play groups and progressing to larger ones.

The evaluation is mandatory because:

  • Dogs engage in social play groups at our facility, so ensuring their comfort and enjoyment is paramount.
  • It ensures the safety of your dog, other dogs, and our highly trained staff.
  • It allows for a slow introduction to prevent stress.
  • It gives your dog the chance to acclimate and decide if we’re the right fit for them.

Daycare

What do dogs do all day at daycare, and do they play all day?

In both daycare programs your dog will have a full day of engagement at our daycare, with structured play sessions, stimulating toys for mental exercise, and scheduled breaks to prevent overstimulation. They’ll enjoy exploring, interacting with staff, group playtime, and/or individual sessions in varied settings, all fostering happiness, health, and socialization throughout the entire day.

You are welcome to drop off your dog at any time during our operating hours.

Group play is based on half-day or full-day rates.

Solo play has a fixed price covering all-day activities and staffing ratios, irrespective of drop-off or pick-up times. We suggest dropping off before 9:00 am and picking up after 4:00 pm for optimal scheduling and pricing.

At National Bark, we recommend feeding your dog at least 90 minutes before participating in any activities to help prevent vomiting, diarrhea, or bloat—a serious and potentially fatal condition. If your dog has eaten recently, please inform our staff at check-in so we can take the appropriate precautions to keep them safe.

Upon request we will send out report cards via email after your pup’s day of play. These reports detail their activities, interactions, and any fun or adventurous moments they experienced during their visit.

National Bark does its best to try and accommodate all types of dogs. Upon completion of required paperwork, updated vaccines, and a successful evaluation most all dogs are welcome. We provide two daycare options: Group Play and Solo Play.

After daycare, it’s normal for your dog to be pleasantly tired from all the playtime and may nap once home. They might also be a bit thirsty—rest assured, fresh water is always available in our play areas to keep them hydrated. If your dog’s paws seem a little sensitive, that’s also common, especially for first-time visitors. With regular attendance, their paw pads will naturally toughen over time.

Not every dog is a socialite, and we understand that. We respect your pup’s mood and temperament. While many dogs thrive in daycare, it’s not suitable for every dog or every stage of their life. Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs are social butterflies. Only a small percentage remain highly social throughout their lives. If your dog isn’t a good fit for group play, we recommend our solo play program for one-on-one play and mental enrichment activities.

Boarding

What should I bring for my dog's overnight stay?

For boarding, please bring food for your pup’s entire stay plus two extra days. Treats, and up to two toys are always welcome. For your pup’s safety, no balls, raw hide chews, or toys smaller than the palm of your hand are allowed.

We prioritize your peace of mind, and we provide everything else, so your personal items do not get misplaced or damaged. Each dog receives a newly sanitized and cleaned bowl fitted to their needs. Fresh clean blankets are provided on their beds every day for maximum comfort after a fun exciting day of play!

We strive to accommodate your pup’s needs within reason, ensuring minimal changes to their diet, if any, during their stay with us. Please include all this information in your booking reservation so that we can review and discuss it with you during check in/ drop off.

Please ensure that any dog requiring medication brings their required dosage, along with two extra days in the original labeled container for their stay. Our staff is experienced in administering medications and will carefully follow provided instructions.

For over-the-counter medications or supplements please bring either the original container or have them organized for easy administration with detailed instructions.

We may ask for clarification if needed. Please note, we do not administer injections as we are not trained veterinarians.

Of course! After each visit and at regular intervals, we’ll offer updates and report cards outlining their activities, learning experiences, and adventures.

All dogs, regardless of their package, enjoy access to our indoor and outdoor parks, climate-controlled spaces, and secure, double-gated areas designed for their safety. Enrichment activities like one-on-one play, treadmill sessions, and scent games are available as optional add-ons for a small fee. Daycare-style classrooms and customized play areas support socialization, mental stimulation, and learning at your dog’s pace.

Our staff ensures dogs enjoy at least six outdoor visits daily, combining potty breaks and playtime to provide ample opportunities for relief, activity, and socialization. Each outing lasts a minimum of 15 minutes, giving dogs plenty of time for fun, movement, and enrichment under close supervision.

You are welcome to check in/drop off your dog during business hours without prior scheduling, as long as you have a reservation for that day. Check-out/pick-up is at noon, similar to most hotels. Late check-out may be available upon request and subject to availability; if we are unable to accommodate a late pick-up, a daycare charge will apply unless your dog is scheduled for bathing on the departure day, in which case there is no additional charge regardless of pick-up time.

Not every dog is a socialite, and we understand that. We respect your pup’s mood and temperament. While many dogs thrive in a daycare environment, it’s not suitable for every dog or every stage of their life. Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs are social butterflies. Only a small percentage remain highly social throughout their lives. If your dog isn’t a good fit for group play, we recommend our solo play program for one-on-one play and mental enrichment activities.

Check in: Our check-in process begins with online reservations and a confirmation email. Next, ensure all details in your account are filled out accurately for your pup’s day or stay. For first-time visitors, please verify information, and for returning guests, please update any changes. During check-in, we’ll review your information and the belongings your pup has brought for their stay. You can wait in your car or come into our lobby.

Check out:  During check-out, we’ll provide a summary of your pup’s day, return their belongings, and ensure they’re happy and healthy. Again, you can wait in your car or meet us in the lobby.

Bathing & spa

How can I schedule a spa appointment, and what is your cancellation policy?

Scheduling a spa appointment is easy — just click the “Make a Reservation” or “Book Now” button to access our customer portal. Need a hand? Feel free to give us a call — we’re always happy to help get your pup on the schedule.

Cancellation Policy
We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for bathing service cancellations. Appointments canceled with less notice may be subject to a 50% fee. Services like paw trims and brushouts don’t require 24-hour notice, but a reservation is still needed so we can ensure proper staffing and accommodate your dog’s needs.

When caring for nervous or anxious dogs during spa treatments, we prioritize creating a comforting, personalized experience. We use soothing music, calming scents, pressure-controlled blowers and hoses, and provide earmuffs for sensitive ears. Our team moves at your dog’s pace, never rushing, to ensure they feel safe and relaxed throughout their visit.

To further support anxious pups, we encourage clients to add on our positive reinforcement treat training and/or calming lick mats, helping to make the experience enjoyable and stress-free.

Spa appointments typically last about 4 hours but may be extended to accommodate your pup’s individual needs and stress levels. We will notify you if the appointment is expected to exceed 4 hours. This timeframe allows for thorough care while minimizing stress during bathing, including ample time for blow-drying and brushing. You may drop off your dog up to 30 minutes before the appointment and pick up within 1 hour after the scheduled pick-up time.

We prioritize your dog’s safety and comfort during spa treatments with gentle handling, a calm environment, and soothing amenities like music and treats. Our services include tailored care for breed-specific needs and use temperature and pressure-controlled hoses and blow dryers, along with anti-slip mats for stability. We maintain high hygiene standards with thorough cleaning after each treatment for a safe and pleasant experience.

You are welcome to schedule spa services separately from daycare or boarding. Simply book an appointment through our online portal or contact us by phone, and we’ll gladly assist you.

During your dog’s first spa visit, expect a welcoming environment where we prioritize their comfort and well-being:

  • Friendly introductions to our front staff.
  • Detailed discussion of your dog’s needs and preferences.
  • Tailored spa treatments based on breed-specific and health considerations.
  • Introduction to calming amenities such as soothing music, treats, and lick mats.
  • Patient and gentle handling throughout the spa session.

We aim to ensure your dog’s first spa experience is positive, relaxing, and safe, with personalized care throughout their visit.

Holiday hours & peak dates

What are the holiday and peak dates?

Our designated holidays and peak dates include New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday and the following Monday, Memorial Day, July 4th and the following day, Labor Day, the day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day, and the day after. Spring Break may also be considered a peak period depending on seasonal demand and scheduling needs.

We strongly recommend booking well in advance for major holidays, summer weekends, and school breaks. While we do offer a waitlist, availability is not guaranteed. For all holiday and peak date reservations, a minimum stay of two nights may be required.

Our regular hours of operation are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM; however, holiday hours may vary throughout the year. Any adjustments to our schedule for major holidays or peak dates will be communicated in advance via email and posted on our website.

We are closed on major holidays including Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Easter Sunday, and the Fourth of July. For other national holidays, modified hours may apply. Any changes to our hours will be communicated in advance via email and updated on our website.

During peak dates and holidays, a minimum two-night stay may be required. To accommodate clients on our waitlist and ensure fair scheduling, we enforce a 48-hour cancellation policy for boarding reservations during these periods.
